Barnard Castle School, a leading independent day and boarding school in Northern England.
Set in 50 acres of grounds in the stunning scenery of North East England, Barnard Castle School, or “Barney” as it is affectionately known, is a leading independent day and boarding school for girls and boys ages 4 – 19 years.
Barnard Castle School: Where character meets ambition
Barnard Castle School is a place where young people discover who they are and what they can become. They develop intellectually, socially, emotionally and morally. Our students do not just leave with results; they leave ready for life.
We are proud to combine high standards of academic achievement with a deep focus on personal growth. Whether they are trying something new, bouncing back from setbacks or standing up for others, our pupils learn that success is about more than outcomes. It is about character.
At Barney, we teach our students how to think, not what to think. We help them go further by helping them understand who they are. We believe in nurturing pupils who are confident and kind, ambitious and grounded. This is not a school that chases perfection, but one that fosters courage, humility and resilience.
Learning through the little things
At the heart of Barnard Castle School is a simple but powerful motto: Parvis imbutus tentabis grandia tutus – When you are steeped in little things, you shall attempt great things safely. It is a daily reminder that progress begins with the small steps.
Whether it is offering a kind word, taking responsibility, or trying something new, every act helps to build the strength, skill and self-belief needed to take on greater challenges. In our environment, pupils feel safe to try, to fail and to try again. That is how true growth happens, and it is how our students learn to approach the world with both confidence and care.

Accommodation
The Barney boarding community is a warm and friendly ‘home away from home’. We understand every family’s needs are different, so we offer families as much flexibility as possible to access our boarding accommodation. Students can board Termly (Full Boarding), Short Stay / Immersion (for a number of weeks including weekends), Weekly and Flexi / Occasional.
All Boarders, regardless of boarding type, enjoy their own bed in our recently refurbished boarding houses, all meals, a structured day including homework study (Prep) and plenty of time for socialising with their friends.
Boarding Houses:
Barney boarding is one big community, and some of our best moments are when we come together, be this for weekend activities on the field or dining together as one large family.
There are three Boarding Houses at Barnard Castle School:
Longfield
The foundations for Longfield House were dug in 1985, three years after girls were first welcomed into Barnard Castle School, and the building was completed in 1987.
Longfield is home to 55 girl Boarders aged 13 to 18 with recently refurbished rooms and shower rooms. The accommodation has a lovely, large kitchen and dining area with a computer room and clothes washing facilities. A separate comfortable living room offers plenty of space to chill out, socialise with friends and watch films or television.
The majority of rooms are one- or two-bed with ensuite wash basins. There are two three-bed rooms for the younger Boarders.
Longfield has its own outdoor space to the front and the rear of the house, including benches and a fire pit for toasting marshmallows on a weekend.
York & Northumberland
The senior boys’ boarding accommodation is in the main school building, occupying the first and second floors. Both York and Northumberland Houses are for boys aged 13 to 18.
Each House has its own separate dormitories with predominantly one- or two-bed rooms. Unusually, both houses share communal areas, which enhances the experience for Boarders of all age groups.
The main communal space is the Bull Ring, which sits directly above Central Hall and boasts a range of comfortable seating, a pool table and table football.
The nearby K-Comm has a sizeable kitchen where Housemasters teach cooking lessons and a large screen television where the boys can enjoy film nights and major live sporting events.
There are further breakout spaces for quiet reading, games console gaming on a weekend and darts, table tennis and a further pool table.

Over the course of the term, we aim to provide a balanced programme of activities that promotes fun and exercise after the rigours of the school day, while also ensuring that pupils have important downtime to relax with each other, contact home or pursue their own hobbies and interests. Trips are optional and pupils will sign up for these in advance with their Housemaster in House.

Pastoral Care
A whole-team approach
Every pupil at Barney has a dedicated network of pastoral support. This begins with their Housemaster or Housemistress (HSM) and their tutor, and extends to our Director of Pastoral Care, Deputy Head Pastoral, and a wider team of staff, including nurses, counsellors, and safeguarding leads.
The Deputy Head Pastoral is a senior leader and the school’s Designated Safeguarding Lead, responsible for the overall pastoral strategy and day-to-day delivery of care. They lead on safeguarding policy, student wellbeing, behaviour, and attendance, and ensure that every member of the pastoral team is trained, equipped and supported to deliver outstanding care.
Supporting them is the Director of Pastoral Care, who works closely with HSMs and tutors to embed key pastoral initiatives across the school. They lead the HeadSpace wellbeing programme, coordinate our AS STEER tracking system, and ensure a data-informed approach to pupil support. They also oversee staff training, run parent workshops, and lead on diversity and inclusion through our Diversity Focus Group.
Together, this team ensures that Barney pupils are supported not just academically, but socially, emotionally, and morally too. Whether through mentoring, assemblies, PSHE, safeguarding, or wellbeing initiatives, our pastoral system is designed to help every young person feel safe, understood and ready to thrive.
Elite Rugby Academy:
Take part in the action with Barney’s Summer Rugby Academy. A programme led by Course Director, Martin Pepper and former England scrum-half and Barney’s Rugby Head Coach, Lee Dickson, that blends elite performance with enjoyment and character development.
Summer Rugby Academy at Barnard Castle School
Barnard Castle School invites young athletes aged 11-16 to experience an unforgettable week of rugby at our Summer Rugby Academy, running from Sunday 19th July to Saturday 25th July for residential participants and Monday 20th July to Friday 24th July for day attendees.
Designed for boys and girls aged 11 to 16, the Academy builds on our proud rugby tradition and combines top-level expert coaching in a safe, inclusive environment to help aspiring players develop their skills, confidence, and love for the game.
